The Location
The ancient town of Sozopol, situated close to the district centre of Bourgas, is perhaps the most charming option on the Black sea Coast. Aptly named Sozopol, which translates as “town of refuge”, it once provided shelter to seafarers over 1,600 years ago. Today, Sozopol has become a place of relaxation and enjoyment the whole year round. Sitting on a rocky peninsula in the farthest southern part of the Bourgas Bay, with a 100-metre strip of land connecting it to the mainland, it is truly a unique destination.

The old town is threaded with narrow, twisting cobbled lanes, with Mediterranean red-tiled roofs overhead. On sea-facing streets, the town’s elegant history is a story told by its buildings. These include two ancient Renaissance churches as well as countless beautiful houses, 45 of which number among Bulgaria’s national monuments. The ten-day annual Apolonia International Art Festival comprises many venues around the town, with nightly performances of music, dance, theatre and cinema.

The two town beaches, Central and Harmani, offer golden stretches and beautiful, safe waters for bathing. For the more active traveler, nearby Golden Fish beach provides popular surfing conditions, as well as windsurfing hire and tuition at very reasonable prices. To the north of the town is the famous Tsar’s Beach, while Raiski Zaliv (Paradise Bay) nestles among the dramatic rock formations to the south. A short drive from the town will take you to fjord-like formations and secluded caves, not to mention the Ropotamo River, a beautiful natural reserve, which helps make the entire Sozopol area one of the most enticing in Europe.
