Sozopol (Созопол), Bulgaria

History
Sozopol founded in 610 B.C. as a small fishing village, offers the rare combination of 2,600 years of history and flourishing area of trendy bars, excellent restaurants, galleries, wide selection of shopping facilities and variety of leisure activities.

Location

Sozopol is located on a small rocky peninsula, 34 km south of Burgas.
This charming place is a popular beach resort, known for its twisting, narrow cobblestone roads, beautiful houses from the Bulgarian Revival period,
Ancient finds and numerous art shows and festivals.

Sozopol is a major cultural centre and attracts visitors all year around.
The Apollonia Festival, one of the biggest Arts events in the country is held here. You can witness a unique atmosphere, created by variety of shows and street entertainment.
It is a favourite place for artists, writers and musicians.
Even though the town has such a wide variety of attractions it still preserves its calmness and tranquillity.

Sozopol has two beaches on its area, but it is not far from the famous Duni Resort and the wild and beautiful beaches of Arkoutino.

Sozopol is situated close to many national reserves among which are the amazing Ropotamo River, Water Lilies and Velyov Lake; as well as some interesting natural formations, the fjord-like formations to the south and the marsh of Stomoplo.

A unique and impressive scene is to see the thousands of storks, pelicans, and other birds’ species gathering in the area every year at the end of the summer to head southwards for the winter.

Places of interest
Other places of interest are the Archaeological Museum, the Holy Virgin Church,
St. Zosim Church; many traditional houses dating back to the 17th century, the Art Gallery and the excavations in the old part of the town.
